Iker Merchán Mota


Barakaldo, Bizkaia, 1977. Merchán holds a PhD in Journalism with international mention from the University of the Basque Country, where he has been a professor since 2016 at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Communication. He has developed his predoctoral research work at the Central European University of Budapest and postdoctoral at the University of Buenos Aires. He has been a lecturer at the University of Cantabria, the University Carlos III of Madrid, the University of Deusto and Mondragon Unibertsitatea.

In his professional career he was responsible for the launch and development of Consumer.es, according to OJD the fifth most read digital media in Spain. Subsequently, he became responsible for Eroski’s presence on the Internet, product manager at the computational linguistics startup Semantix and manager of the audiovisual production company for the Internet Soda.tv. He founded the corporate communications consultancy Sarean Sar and re-founded the Bilbao beer company La Salve.

Member of the research group Bitartez, his research work focuses on ways to reduce social exclusion and promote equality through communication in digital environments.
